Canvas Learning Platform Restores Services After Cyberattack and Data Breach
The Canvas Learning Platform, widely used by thousands of educational institutions, has resumed operations following a severe cyberattack that disrupted services across the nation during critical final exam periods. The parent company, Instructure, confirmed that they reached a ransom agreement with hackers, known as ShinyHunters, who had stolen approximately 3.65TB of data, primarily affecting educators and students through compromised accounts. Instructure stated that the stolen data was returned as part of the agreement, and the company has since apologized for the breach. Several universities, including Harvard, Duke, and others, along with various school systems, experienced significant disruption during the attack. Authorities urge institutions to assess their cybersecurity measures in light of the incident, as questions about data protection and institutional responses continue to linger.
