Massive Mudslide and Floods Impact Tibet-Nepal Border, Leaving Hundreds Missing
A devastating mudslide and subsequent floods have struck the Tibet-Nepal border, leading to a significant humanitarian crisis. Authorities report that 261 foreigners from 23 countries are currently missing, among them fifteen Britons and 49 Indians. The death toll has risen to at least 16, with more than 546 individuals unaccounted for. Rescue operations are hampered by challenging terrain and ongoing risk of additional landslides. China has mobilized rescue teams, including medical personnel, and supplied disaster relief to the affected areas. Local government efforts continue to intensify as search and rescue operations proceed in the mudslide-stricken realms of Gyirong Port, with emergency hotlines established for families of those missing. Recent reports indicate that the previous high risk of a barrier lake bursting near the disaster site has diminished, allowing rescuers to focus on locating survivors amidst the wreckage.
