Rising Tensions Over Alaska LNG Deal Between US and South Korea

Tensions between the United States and South Korea have escalated concerning a proposed $54 billion investment in the Alaska LNG project, as President Trump pressures Seoul to finalize the deal or face doubled tariffs. While Trump recently announced a $200 billion energy investment package from South Korea, officials in Seoul have contested the claims, stating that the U.S. projections were premature and not fully agreed upon. South Korea is also negotiating to fund Westinghouse nuclear plants in the U.S., with plans for eight large-scale nuclear facilities worth $120 billion. However, the Korea-U.S. partnership is being strained by differing perspectives on the terms of the Alaska LNG deal, which could jeopardize ongoing security discussions between the two nations. South Korean officials have voiced their concerns about the unilateral nature of U.S. announcements regarding the Alaska project, indicating that they are not prepared to commit to funding it just yet.
