The USS Benfold, a US Navy destroyer, experienced a significant engineering failure last month, leaving the ship powerless for four days in the South China Sea. During this period, the crew of approximately 300 sailors was without essential services, including toilets, air conditioning, and food. The incident raises concerns about the operational readiness of the US Navy amidst ongoing tensions in the region. After repairs, the USS Benfold has since departed Japan, but the incident has been described as a potential crisis for the Navy, with implications for maritime security and military readiness.
