New York City Announces Reforms to Accelerate Affordable Housing Development
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has unveiled a series of reforms known as the SPEED initiative, aimed at fast-tracking the development of affordable housing. This initiative comes in response to the ongoing issue of numerous affordable homes remaining vacant for extended periods. The proposed reforms seek to reduce delays in the housing lottery process and streamline the construction timeline. Additionally, plans include redevelopment of the Bed-Stuy Multi-Service Center into all-affordable housing with spaces designated for community services. The administration is determined to address the pressing need for affordable housing as the city navigates budget constraints and ongoing housing challenges.
