Significant Wildfires Plague Northern Minnesota as Containment Efforts Progress
Authorities have reported that the Stewart Trail Fire near Two Harbors is now fully contained after burning approximately 350 acres. Highway 61 has reopened to traffic following this containment. Meanwhile, efforts continue for the Flanders Fire near Crosslake, which has grown to nearly 1,700 acres, with 60% containment achieved. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has identified people of interest related to the Flanders Fire and is investigating its cause, which is believed to be human-related. Governor Walz has activated the National Guard to assist in combating the wildfires and has declared a peacetime emergency in response to the escalating situation. Residents affected by the wildfires recount their distressing experiences, with some families losing their homes. Firefighters are also responding to multiple other wildfires across northern Minnesota.
