The U.S. House of Representatives is currently navigating a contentious situation surrounding the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, initiated by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie. Recently, Massie admitted to keeping his impeachment resolution secret from GOP leaders, which has created tensions within the party. As the House prepares for an early recess ahead of the midterm elections, efforts to address the impeachment have faced delays, with Speaker Mike Johnson cancelling sessions to avoid a vote that could be politically embarrassing for Republicans. Amid this chaotic backdrop, several lawmakers are criticizing the early adjournment, arguing that important issues, including AI regulation, are being overlooked. The ongoing debate highlights a split within the GOP, as some members push for accountability over the Iran war, while others seek to dodge potentially harmful legislative votes as elections loom.
