A tragic incident unfolded outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur, as a gunman opened fire, resulting in an exchange of gunfire with a police officer. Reports indicate that up to 30 shots were fired, leaving the officer and the suspect critically wounded. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the shooting, emphasizing that a fundraising campaign should not be necessary for Canadian Jews to safely pray. Witnesses described the chaotic scenes filled with confusion and fear as worshippers gathered for the holy observance. The Special Investigations Unit is currently investigating the shooting, which has raised concerns about rising antisemitism in Canada.
